The Department of Economics welcomed Chief Economist of the European Central Bank Philip Lane for a seminar on Monetary Policy Tightening in the Euro Area.
Professor Lane is a member of the Executive Board of the ECB, charged with setting monetary policy for 345 million people in 20 countries across the euro area.
The lecture to the Department's Msc- and Postgraduate Diploma- students in Economics and Public Policy was live cast to hundreds around the world and carried live on the ECB website. Professor Lane's slides can be found here.
Prof. Lane reflected on the current challenges for monetary policy in the euro area, the conduct of monetary policy, the need for economists to be good writers as well as good analysts, and the importance of policy making for the common good.
Afterward the lecture, Prof. Lane met local business representatives and Limerick's Chamber of Commerce hosted by UL's President Prof. Mey.
