Poetry Ireland, in association with the MA in Creative Writing, University of Limerick, are thrilled to announce Vital Signs, Poems of Illness and Healing – A Reading Event featuring readings from Vital Signs’ editor, Martin Dyar and poets Victoria Kennefick, Karen J McDonnell and Eoin Devereux.
This event will take place on Thursday the 2nd of February at 2pm in the Atrium Area of the University Concert Hall Building at the University of Limerick.
Vital Signs, Poems of Illness and Healing – A Reading Event will be moderated by Professor Eoin Devereux, co-director of the Centre for The Study of Popular Music and Popular Culture in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, UL. There will also be guest readings from authors Donal Ryan and Sarah Moore Fitzgerald as well as President of the University of Limerick, Professor Kerstin Mey.
Judiciously selected, Vital Signs includes poems by such greats as Seamus Heaney, Seán Ó Ríordáin and Eavan Boland, along with diverse selections by the best of classic and contemporary writers, offering memorable accounts of the experiences of illness, recovery, and the end of life, as well as the subjects of public health, eating disorders and the coronavirus pandemic; the anthology also offers a fresh gloss on the meaning of healing.
Speaking ahead of the event Eoin Devereux said: “Vital Signs is a reminder – if a reminder were needed – of the powerful role played by creativity in articulating the unspoken. Creativity in all its forms, and poetry in particular allows us to capture the essence of a feeling or an experience. It offers us the chance to make sense of the complexities of being alive, of experiencing illness, healing and mortality.”
