Performer: Mathuriga Thevapalan

In this PhD performance, Mathuriga Thevapalan, a second-year PhD student, explores the connection between pre-existing materials and improvisation within South Indian classical music. The performance will feature a traditional South Indian music recital by Prof. Karaikudi S. Subramanian, Thenuga and Mathuriga on the vina, and Karaikudi R. Krishnamurthy on the mridangam, accompanied by his student Delakshan on the kanjira. 

Karaikudi Subramanian and Karaikudi Krishnamurthy are two of the most senior musicians in the field of South Indian classical music, both representing the 9th generation of the Karaikudi lineage. This is a rare opportunity to witness these masters coming together.
