On 21 November Dr Ruan O’Donnell, Senior Lecturer in the School of History and Geography, presented a paper entitled ‘Micheal Gaughan Reassessed’ to the Irish American Law Society of Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
The symposium was hosted by Cleveland State University School of Law and heard contributions from former Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor, State Supreme Court of Ohio on USAID’s Justice for All programme in Ukraine.
As a keynote speaker, O’Donnell examined the far reaching global legal reverberations of Gaughan’s fatal hunger strike in England in 1974, not least the Tokyo Protocol of the World Medical Association which prohibited physicians from participating in the brutalization of patients and prisoners.
Over fifty senior law practitioners attended O’Donnell’s lecture.
