The Bernal has over 400 researchers and support staff with 67 internationally recognized academics and principal investigators leading in driving scientific progress to strengthen the Irish and European economies with a commitment to delivering value in the areas of Health, Energy and the Environment.
There are a multitude of National and European supported programs available that enable and fund collaborative research with (RPO’s) Research Performing Organisations and Industry. The Bernal is participating and leading in a multitude of these programs. These programs are run with Consortium groups and new industry partners are always welcome to participate and specify new research topics. contact best@ul.ie

The Bernal is also host to funded research Centres from Enterprise Ireland (EI) and Science foundation Ireland (SFI) that can support industry research areas. Our hosted centres are:
- SSPC – The Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Pharmaceuticals
SSPC is a world-leading hub of Irish research expertise developing innovative technologies to address key challenges facing the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry. Our in-depth scientific and engineering research expertise aids companies who need tailored solutions to their bespoke challenges.
- PMTC – The Enterprise Ireland Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre
Leading industry informed research centre focused on developing advanced technology solutions for all stages of pharmaceutical manufacturing. Indigenous SMEs along with MNCs access PMTC to inform the research agenda. - DPTC – The Enterprise Ireland Dairy Processing Technology Centre
DPTC is an industry–academic collaborative research centre, hosted by the University of Limerick, with a research agenda driven by the long-term growth opportunities for the dairy sector. The centre is funded by Enterprise Ireland and the Dairy Industry Partners.
These centres being placed at the Bernal Institute is testament to the diverse capabilities, engineering acumen and people at the institute. Our collaborative and innovative environment enables a new look to existing problems and create an industry accelerator to meet the most complex of challenges.
