My name is Ernesto Batista-Sánchez and I'm a PhD candidate in the Department of Economics of Kemmy Business School at the University of Limerick. I did my undergraduate studies in Tourism Management in Cuba and my Masters’ degree in International Tourism in UL.
Why did you choose to master your ambitions in MA International Tourism?
Enrolling in the MA in International Tourism at UL had a profound impact on my personal development and provided me with clarity regarding my career path. Throughout the program, I deepened my understanding of the industry and gained valuable insights into the business aspects of international tourism.
This educational journey strengthened my ability to reflect critically and think analytically within the realm of international tourism. The interactive and supportive postgraduate study environment, facilitated by classmates, faculty members, and industry experts, further enriched my learning experience. The M.A. has a strong international focus across modules that helped me learn about tourism businesses and global tourism trends, tourism marketing and management, tourism economics and entrepreneurship.

Firstly, the university has established itself as a renowned institution with a strong academic reputation, particularly in the field of tourism. Furthermore, the University of Limerick's vibrant campus and diverse student community create a stimulating learning environment that fosters cultural exchange and personal growth.
What has been the highlight of the programme so far?
For me, pursuing an MA in International Tourism at UL deepened my industry and business knowledge and enhanced my own reflections and critical-thinking skills in the area of international tourism. I developed a more applied and global perspective on key industry practices and trends. This has helped advance my career readiness. Additionally, developing this knowledge and skills provided me with an incredible opportunity to work in the private sector (big and small/micro businesses) or public sector.
What benefit do you feel the MA in International Tourism will have on your career?
The MA not only widened my career prospects but also provided me with additional professional skills and a network that accelerated my career possibilities. With these new skills and knowledge, I was eligible to progress to a PhD programme, where my research focuses on the role of new technologies and sustainability to enhance the visitor experience at the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare.
Advice for future students on the MA?
I strongly encourage you to actively engage in all aspects of the program, both inside and outside the classroom. Take advantage of the extensive resources and support available to you, such as attending guest lectures, participating in workshops, and seeking guidance from professors and industry professionals.
Secondly, make the most of the practical opportunities provided by the program. Whether it's field trips, or collaborative projects, these experiences will enhance your understanding of the industry and allow you to apply your theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.
Lastly, don't underestimate the power of self-reflection and personal development. Take time to reflect on your strengths, areas for improvement, and future goals. Set realistic targets, manage your time effectively, and maintain a healthy work-life balance throughout your studies.
