Brief Description

The programme will be particularly attractive to law graduates who wish to develop a specialisation in commercial law, and especially an ability to understand and apply commercial law in multi-jurisdictional scenarios. The programme will enhance the career prospects of graduates, those starting careers in the legal professions, legal advisers to commercial entities and any lawyers whose work will involve cross border commercial relations.

Why choose the LLM in International Commercial Law

The Law School

The School of Law is a department of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences. It is located in the ground floor of the Foundation Building.

The Law School also has a long tradition of committing ourselves to developing the transferrable skills of students through projects such as Advanced Lawyering and Moot Court, and through cutting edge core modules such as Alternative Dispute Resolution. All of these initiatives promote ‘big picture’ holistic thinking, and can explicitly enhance student soft skills such as problem solving, decision-making, communication, teamwork, planning, critical thinking and human relations skills. In combination with our compulsory clinical education initiatives, they provide an integrating impulse –promoting a sense of coherence across particular programmes of study and facilitating students in understanding how their learning applies in particular contexts. It is not surprising therefore that our graduates have ended up as partners in major law firms, as partners in major accounting firms, at the bar, in senior roles in government departments, NGOs, at the EU, in academia, and private industry.

Postgraduate students also benefit from this research expertise, whether they decide to enrol in a general LLM or specialist LLM (LLM International Commercial Law, Human Rights in Criminal Justice or European and Comparative Law), or undertake a research postgraduate degree as part of our significant doctoral cohort of students.

The School is also strongly committed to working with the practising legal profession, government departments, NGOs, and other relevant stakeholders across all disciplines of law. We have developed particularly strong working relationships with An Garda Síochána and the Office of the Revenue Commissioners. We have also fostered strong international links and it is possible for our students to undertake placements in Canada and the US. Our students can also spend a full academic year in a European university in Malta, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, and the Netherlands. We also have links with universities in Germany, France and Spain where subjects are taught through the native language. We have a very vibrant international student body in the Law School. A recent International Student Survey, which involved over 5000 International students currently studying across the seven Irish Universities, voted UL as the number one University in providing the best student experience, the best student support and warmest welcome in Ireland. UL is also among the top 100 Erasmus host universities according to the latest statistics released by the EU Commission.

Why Choose the LLM in International Commercial Law?

The LLM in International Commercial Law has been a very successful programme since its inception, with, on average, over 88% of graduates finding employment within a year of graduation. The programme will be particularly attractive to law graduates who wish to develop a specialisation in commercial law, and especially an ability to understand and apply commercial law in multi-jurisdictional scenarios.
The LLM in International Commercial Law immerses the post-graduate student in more detailed aspects of commercial law, as well as developing broadly applicable legal research and other transferable skills. The emphasis is on those areas of law, such as credit and security, intellectual property and competition law, which are critical to the operation of any commercial enterprise in the modern world. The programme also takes account of the increasing internationalisation of commerce with modules in global competition law and international trade organisations. This international focus of the programme provides opportunities for graduates to find employment, not just in Ireland, but in many other jurisdictions.

Choose from a wide range of modules including:
• Law of International Trade Organisations
• Law of International Business Associations/Corporate Governance
• Global Competition Law
• International Protection of Intellectual Property
• Counter Terrorism Law and International Business

Graduate Profiles LLM in International Commercial Law

Eimear Cleary LLM in International Commercial Law, Class of 2011 "I graduated from the LLM in International Commercial Law in 2011. The LLM attracted me because of its focus on the understanding and application of commercial law in international scenarios. I believed that it would enhance my skill-set and career profile by strengthening my credentials for prospective employment. In my experience, the LLM was beneficial from both an academic and personal perspective. Through a combination of lectures, interactive tutorials, legal research classes, comparative law dissertations and presentations, I developed my analytical, research and presentation skills. My experience at UL prepared me to competently overcome challenges and embrace opportunities in my professional training. I am now an associate in the commercial property department in Arthur Cox. Arthur Cox’s reputation of excellence in commercial property impressed me. As an associate, I am engaged in the highest quality legal work. Multiple and diverse learning opportunities are presented on a daily basis. I work in a very stimulating, collaborative and rewarding environment. In my opinion, UL not only facilitates education, it is instrumental in shaping character."

Killian O’Donnell, Graduate LLM International Commercial Law, Class of 2019  I graduated from the LLM in International Commercial Law in 2019. I chose the University of Limerick for my masters because of the emphasis put on getting employment in your chosen field after graduation. I then decided on the LLM in International Commercial Law because I had a keen interest in the commercial aspect of Law after doing an internship for a Summer with United Technologies Corporation (Now Raytheom Technologies). This interest was further developed in my masters with modules such as International Business Transactions and the Law of International Business Associations to name a few.

When doing my masters we were provided with numerous modules to develop your interview skills, through assessment centres, group interviews, and individual interviews. After these practice interview scenarios, we were provided with invaluable feedback that I believe helped me get my first job after graduating in Bank of Ireland. I was in Bank of Ireland for four years while also sitting my Fe1 exams. I am now in  Ogier Leman, where I have started my traineeship with my first rotation being in the banking and Finance department. My masters is still helping me to this day, as working in an international Law firm I work alongside our colleagues in multiple jurisdictions. The multi-jurisdictional experience I gained from my masters has given me a great starting point in my current roll and is really helping me in my career. I would highly recommend this course for anybody looking to combine business and law on a national and international level.”

Thomas Costello,LLM in International Commercial Law, Class of 2015 "I graduated from the LLM in International Commercial Law in 2015. I was attracted to the LLM because of its focus on the practical application of Commercial Law across a wide variety of jurisdictions. The LLM was both academically challenging and rewarding, with an emphasis on learning through interactive tutorials and presentations. It was through the LLM that I was given the opportunity to apply Commercial law to current world market and business scenarios, to step into the shoes of lawyers or businessmen and assess situations from their point of view, all of which has been vital in developing my legal reasoning and analytic skills. Currently, I am a trainee in the litigation department of Eversheds Sutherland, having won the Eversheds Sutherland LLM Scholarship and successfully progressed through the Eversheds Sutherland Summer Intern Programme. In my opinion, the University of Limerick, and the LLM, have been instrumental in improving my skillset and obtaining my training contract, and I would highly recommend the LLM to any student seeking to further their legal career."
