This micro-credential represents a single module within a larger further award (eg. Certificate, Diploma, Masters). The purpose of this module is to provide the student with the opportunity to develop knowledge and expertise in the provision of care to the older person.

This module explores therapeutic interventions within the context of implementation, coordination, monitoring and evaluation of gerontological care. Person-centred care, adaptation, self-determination, advocacy, re-enablement, teaching, ethical issues, quality care, health promotion and interdisciplinary teamwork are explored.

Discussion and exploration of liaison with carer/significant other/family, care transitions and caring across the continuum (home, primary & community, residential, acute, rehabilitation).

Learning outcomes:

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of specific therapeutic interventions in care of the older person within the context of person-centred care.
  • Evaluate one's teaching and coaching role in the promotion of health and wellness of the older person. 
  • Understand one's role within the interdisciplinary team in caring for older people and their families. 
  • Value the older person's right to self-determination and involvement in decision-making. 
  • Develop a commitment to ethical practice within the provision of gerontological care
  • A Registered Nurse on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet criteria identified in the English Language qualifications set by the University of Limerick.

Entry requirements are established to ensure the learner can engage with the course material and assessments, at a level suitable to their needs, and the academic requirements of the module. By applying to this micro-credential, you are confirming that you have reviewed and understand any such requirements, and that you meet the eligibility criteria for admission.

Successful completion of this module does not automatically qualify you for entry into a further award. All programme applicants must meet the entry requirements listed if applying for a further award.
