The purpose of this module is to provide the student with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and expertise regarding the principles underpinning perioperative nursing at specialist/advanced practice levels. Please note students must complete this module in order to advance to NS6082
This module explores the principles and philosophy underpinning perioperative nursing. Personalised care of patients within the highly technical perioperative setting. The role of the nurse in anaesthetics, recovery, pain management, and collaborative care in perioperative environments. Health and safety dimensions in providing safe and effective perioperative nursing in an ever-changing environment. Recommended perioperative practices, guidelines, and policies. The challenges in promoting, managing, controlling, and minimising risk within the perioperative area.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the programme the student will be able to:
- Critically discuss the principals underpinning personalised care of patients throughout the perioperative experience.
- Critically debate approaches to promoting safety and minimising risk in the perioperative setting.
- Critically discuss the application of guidelines and policies in the perioperative setting.
- Critically evaluate the creation and maintenance of an optimal perioperative environment.
- Demonstrate responsibility for personal and professional development in advancing the role of the nurse in managing the patient within the perioperative setting
- A Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
- Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet criteria identified in the English Language qualifications set by the University of Limerick.
- Applicants must complete this module in order to advance to NS6082
- Applicants must be working in perioperative theatre to undertake this module
