This Micro-credential applies macroeconomic principles to the international economy. Identifies the consequences of extending national macroeconomic models to allow for international interdependencies. A focus on key global dynamics, in the context of increasing global economic integration.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the historical economic context and rationale leading to the creation of international institutions such as the World Bank, The International Monetary Fund, and European institutions as well as the factors driving their evolution.
- Discuss global interconnectivity of the effects of short-term events (e.g. political instability, wars, humanitarian and climate disasters) and longer-term trends (e.g. climate change, migration, globalisation).
- Explain, in terms of theory and data, why so many poor countries failed to prosper for so long and why many eventually grew.
- Judge alternative ways of coping with the significant change induced by global economic trends.
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the complexity of global economic problems and why they are so difficult to remedy.
- Value different perspectives of globalisation.

Designed for people who want to study economics at postgraduate level, but do not have a strong background in the topic. The module is suitable for professionals who want to upskill in economics, and who already hold an honours degree or equivalent in a non-economic discipline. It will also benefit those who want to build up credits to seek a master’s degree in economics. Applications with a lower result or a Level 7 qualification will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Entry requirements are established to ensure the learner can engage with the course material and assessments, at a level suitable to their needs, and the academic requirements of the module. By applying to this micro-credential, you are confirming that you have reviewed and understand any such requirements, and that you meet the eligibility criteria for admission.
