Theoretical Underpinnings of Practice Based Inquiry

This micro-credential represents a single module within a larger further award (eg. Certificate, Diploma, Masters). This module is designed to introduce you to Practice Based Inquiry, and how it can be used to identify questions in practice that can be developed into research questions and projects that seek solutions to challenges and issues within the care environment. Addressing a clinical problem through practice-based inquiry involves asking the right questions, in the right way, finding the best available evidence, and assessing what research evidence might be needed to guide future clinical care or service decisions

Through this module we help you to develop the skill of critical reflective practice, to identify research questions; to find appraise and synthesise evidence. We will introduce frameworks for use in Practice based inquiry; explore issues such as research ethics, governance and integrity and assist you in how to prepare a practice-based inquiry research proposal / protocol for ethical approval. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the programme the student will be able to: 

  • Critically discuss the theoretical underpinnings of practice-based enquiry 

  • Critically review the identified frameworks for practice-based enquiry 

  • Critically reflect on an aspect of practice and identify potential research questions 

  • Apply an identified framework to a practice-based enquiry topic 

  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively search for the evidence underpinning the topic for practice enquiry 

  • Prepare a practice enquiry research protocol for submission to an ethics committee  

  • Evaluate various sources of information and evidence available and critically appraise their value 

  1. Hold a recognised health-related professional qualification and current professional registration with their relevant regulatory professional body

  1. Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet criteria identified in the English Language qualifications set by the University of Limerick 

Entry requirements are established to ensure the learner can engage with the course material and assessments, at a level suitable to their needs, and the academic requirements of the module. Successful completion of this module does not automatically qualify you for entry into a further award. All programme applicants must meet the entry requirements listed if applying for a further award.
