The purpose of this module is to provide nurses operating at either specialist or advanced practice levels with the knowledge and skills to lead, organise and deliver therapeutic interventions and support so that they can operate as autonomous practitioners.
Lectures will aim to explore the therapeutic interventions required in specific respiratory diseases, and may draw from the following themes:
- Primary, secondary, and tertiary care interface in the care of persons with respiratory conditions.
- Health Education and Promotion. ·
- Anticipatory care and self-management in respiratory conditions.
- Breathlessness and multi-faceted conditions.
- Pulmonary rehabilitation.
- Medication management, pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to respiratory conditions.
- Respiratory failure and non-invasive ventilation.
- Leading and supporting holistic caring interventions in acute/emergency and pathological conditions.
- The role of the nurse at specialist and advanced level in multidisciplinary care.
- Practice innovations at specialist/advanced levels in respiratory nursing.

Learning outcomes:
- Critically discuss the role of the nurse in planning, monitoring, coordinating, and managing care of individuals experiencing respiratory health conditions within a multidisciplinary context.
- Critically evaluate evidence based therapeutic interventions to support individuals experiencing alterations in respiratory status.
- Critically review current practice/innovations and utilise evidence to inform respiratory nursing practice.
- Critically explore strategies that empower individuals with respiratory health conditions to maximise health and wellbeing.
- Demonstrate an awareness of the need to anticipate, lead and manage respiratory care interventions.
- Critically discuss the psychological impact of having a respiratory condition on the individual and their family/significant others.
- A registered nurse on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland
- Be engaged in practice as a registered nurse for at least one year
- Students would normally possess a primary degree( Minimum 2.2) or show evidence of recognized prior learning (RPL) as outlined in the ( RPL) policy of the University and Department of Nursing and Midwifery
- Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet criteria identified in the English Language qualifications set by the University of Limerick.
Successful completion of this module does not automatically qualify you for entry into a further award. All programme applicants must meet the entry requirements listed if applying for a further award.
