National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS)
The National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) is a partnership between the HSE (Mid-West) and University of Limerick (UL) which was formally established in January 2003.
The NIHS recognises the need for a shared strategic approach across the healthcare and educational sectors. The primary aim of the NIHS is to promote and facilitate the delivery of relevant high quality education, research and information resources in health, social and management sciences, ultimately translating into the advancement of excellence in healthcare service provision. This remit spans acute, pre-hospital, primary, community and continuing care healthcare settings and across all faculties at UL.
Research
The NIHS, through a number of initiatives has positioned itself in order to maximise both innovative and applied research activities, and promote the emergence of an incipient research culture. Specifically the NIHS delivers these objectives through a number of activities, including:

Professional Training
The NIHS is committed to its role as an education facilitator and supports the creation and development of recognised educational and training programs. Consequently, the NIHS participates in furnishing individuals with the necessary qualifications and skills, to deliver services of the highest quality, in the most appropriate care settings. Whilst addressing the ongoing educational needs of the HSE’s healthcare professionals, particularly at post-graduate level, the NIHS contributes towards the development of a variety of heath science programmes at UL including in addition to ongoing curriculum development.

The NIHS also facilitates the professional training needs (of a scientific/medical nature), across the industrial sector, notably the medical device industry. Bespoke programmes (at basic, intermediate & advanced levels) are delivered. Clients include:

Regional Medical Library
The Regional Medical Library is located on the first floor of the Clinical Education and Research Centre (CERC), University Hospital Limerick, Dooradoyle.
The library may be used by any HSE Mid-West staff member or student on placement in one of the ULHG Hospitals.
Library Opening Hours:
The library is accessible 24/7 using your HSE Mid-West swipe card.
Staffed services are available: 09.00am - 11.00am, 11.30am - 13.30pm, 14.00pm - 16.00pm, Monday, Wednesday and Friday in July and August.
