"It was a beautiful, helpful, and healthy environment."
The final PhD Writers’ Week of 2023 has taken place from August 21st to 25th and what a good time it was!
Seven cross-disciplinary PhD students participated to improve as academic writers.
We had students studying Chemical Sciences, performing arts at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, Politics and Public Administration, Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics and Psychology.
The students established a routine of meeting each morning from 9am to 2pm in our Writers' Space with our in-house writing expert Lawrence Cleary.
Their sessions involved practicing different writing strategies, discussing how they can be better writers and sharing advice on writing, productivity and time management.
During the week, each student met with a peer tutor one on one to discuss their personal strategies of writing and to receive advice specific to their thesis, considering the stage of their writing process.
We kept the coffee and tea pouring throughout each day and the catering company Aramark provided lunch on Monday and Wednesday from the Eden restaurant at University of Limerick.
The students made great improvements in how they balance their schedules while still completing a PhD. We are very proud of the work they accomplished throughout the week.
They all really enjoyed themselves and had very positive things to say about the event.
To quote one PhD student who summarised the event perfectly: "It was an amazing experience. Thank you so much for creating this space for us and for all of the staff support. It was a beautiful, helpful, and healthy environment."
