The late Vicky Phelan was born in Mooncoin, Co Kilkenny in 1974. She graduated with a BA in European Studies at UL and was also conferred with an honorary doctorate for her contribution to improving women's health in June 2018.

Her memoir, Overcoming, has received much critical acclaim, having been named An Post Irish Book of the Year 2019 and also winning the RTÉ Radio 1 Listeners’ Choice Award for 2019.

She also appeared on the Late Late Show to discuss her book in September 2019.

Vicky made headlines in 2018 after opening the lid on a major national health scandal in the CervicalCheck Screening Programme, where over 220 women with cervical cancer were wrongly given the all clear.

She subsequently founded the 221+ CervicalCheck Patient in July 2018 which offers support to the victims of the CervicalCheck Screening scandal and their families.

Vicky passed away in November, 2022.

We are proud to say that Vicky's memoir was our One Campus One Book choice for 2019/20.
