Dónal O'Leary
AccessCampus Coordinator
Unit G, LEDP, Roxboro road, Limerick. V94 WEC9
Hello, my name is Dónal O’Leary. I have been the Coordinator of AccessCampus UL since its inception in 2004, working to strengthen the connection between the university and local communities. In the early days, I founded the Study Club, creating a supportive space for second-level students, a programme that continues to thrive.
My role now focuses on engaging with community groups, organising initiatives that address local needs, and ensuring AccessCampus remains a centre for learning and collaboration. I also coordinate student placements for the School of Allied Health Sciences and Public Health, allowing students to gain hands-on experience within the community. Additionally, I work with UL Global to connect international students with meaningful volunteer opportunities.
At the heart of my approach is the belief that we should "meet people where they are at", fostering confidence and ensuring that everyone has a sense of identity while engaging with AccessCampus. What particularly draws me to this role is its diversity, variety, and the need for adaptability and flexibility each year.
Dr. Seán Costello
AccessCampus Study Club Coordinator
Unit G, LEDP, Roxboro Road, Limerick. V94 WEC9
Hi, my name is Sean. I have been involved with the Study Club since 2008, starting as a volunteer before becoming the Coordinator. In 2016, I began a PhD at the University of Limerick in the Department of Politics and Public Administration, focusing on educational disadvantage in Ireland. My research informs my approach, helping me support students in a way that is both practical and evidence-based.
As Study Club Coordinator, I am responsible for sourcing subject-specific volunteers, onboarding new students, and ensuring they stay on track to achieve their goal of progressing to third-level education. My favourite part of this role is watching students reach their academic milestones and take the next steps in their education.
Katherine Kirby
Community Support Worker
Hello, My name is Katherine Kirby and my role in AccessCampus is part time Community Support Administrator. I am working in AccessCampus since August 2024.
I have been involved with AccessCampus indirectly for approximately 15 years. Through my previous role as an Estate Management Officer in a local Community, I linked with Donal by supporting members of that community to access soft courses and taking Dietetic students on Community placements.
Since I started working here, I have a different view of AccessCampus as I never realised the variety of activities that take place and that so many groups use the space. One of the aspects that I enjoy most about working here is assisting Donal and the members of the communities, University Staff and Students that utilise AccessCampus.
Clara Leahy
Educational Support Worker
Hello, my name is Clara Leahy, a second-year Arts student at the University of Limerick, specialising in English and History. Currently, I’m completing a six-month co-op placement at AccessCampus, where I contribute to a variety of initiatives that support both students and the broader community.
In my role, I assist with our second-level study club, guiding students through CAO applications and preparing them for the Junior and Leaving Cert exams. I also support the Southill After-Schools club and help run programmes like the conversation club for Ukrainian learners and the Hi-Digital initiative, which empowers older community members to improve their digital skills.
What I enjoy most about my work at AccessCampus is the chance to engage with a diverse range of people. The environment is dynamic and social, offering me the opportunity to support meaningful programmes and connect education with the community. It’s a rewarding experience, and I’m grateful to be part of it.
