General English

Immerse yourself in year-round or summer language programmes designed to sharpen your everyday English skills, fostering fluency and confidence in real-life situations.

The year-round programme is suitable for learners with various levels of English who wish to improve their general English communication skills. 

We also offer a 25-week Study and Work program designed for Non-EU students. Gain valuable skills, explore Ireland, and take an internationally recognised Cambridge Exam.

The summer programme follows the same timetable and syllabus as the Year Round Programme, with added extras. 

 

 

General English options

Year-round programme

General English Standard - 20 hours per week

The typical timetable is 9am-12.50pm each day from Monday to Friday (20 x 50 minute academic hours).

General English Intensive - 24 hours per week

Also 9am-12.50pm each day from Monday to Friday (20 x 50 minute academic hours) plus five academic hours extra over two afternoons per week.

Summer programme

The general English summer programme follows the same timetable and syllabus as the year-round programme.

Each week the summer programme also includes:

  • One full-day weekend excursion (Saturday)
  • Three afternoon activities plus extra sports sessions
  • One evening activity

Academic English

If you're aiming for higher education, our International Foundation Programme hones the academic English skills essential for success in university studies.

Our Preparation for University course ensures a smooth transition into the challenges of academic life.

These courses are suitable for students who have received a conditional offer from the University of Limerick, and other third-level institutions.

Students intending to progress to study at other institutions should be aware of the minimum English language requirements for the programme of their choice.

 

Academic English options

Certificate in International Foundation Studies

The Certificate in International Foundation Studies is a Special Purpose Award, Level 6, worth 60 ECTS, recognised within the National Framework of Qualifications.

It is is a one-year full-time programme that offers international high school students a pathway to undergraduate study. It is suitable for international students who do not hold qualifications equivalent to the Irish Leaving Certificate or A-Level, and provides a comprehensive academic and English language foundation for undergraduate study.   

Preparation for University 

The English-language Preparation for University programmes cater specifically for the language needs of students who intend to study for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, or study abroad, at the University of Limerick.

Preparation for University is aimed at students who have reached the academic entry requirements for their chosen course but need to improve their English in order to meet the language entry requirements for their chosen pathway at UL.

Preparation for IELTS

Prepare for your IELTS exam with UL Language Centre's expertly designed course that focuses on developing your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

Preparation for IELTS provides immersive lessons with the flexibility to attend 5 weeks, 10 weeks or specific classes to suit student needs.

This comprehensive programme covers essential areas such as vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and punctuation, ensuring you build a solid foundation for each section of the IELTS exam.
