About You

You are interested in critical global, national and local issues such as climate change, inequality, migration, physical degradation and natural resource management. You want to make sense of our highly complex world and become an informed citizen. You want to learn field and laboratory techniques that are highly valued by employers, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS). You want to pass your knowledge on to future generations by informing public policy, working for an NGO or perhaps as an educator.

Why study geography at UL?

At UL geography the focus is on space and place. Studying geography will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle and plan for the future needs of society. Through lectures, tutorials, lab and fieldwork, you will be equipped to identify, analyse and explain complex human and natural phenomena in a succinct and clear manner. You will learn to work as a member of a team, as well as working independently, all while developing your critical thinking skills.

Globalisation, geopolitics, population change and sustainability are amongst the largest challenges confronting society in the twenty-first century. Selecting geography as a degree subject enables you to understand these issues and the ways in which they shape the world. At the University of Limerick you will develop expert knowledge and skills to interrogate the range of different approaches to, and perspectives on these issues.

Geography modules

The geography modules offered in the UL undergraduate programmes are designed to scaffold student learning beginning with introductory modules in year 1 and building on these through specialist options from year 2 onwards.*

You can study geography on the BA ArtsBSc Social Sciences and Physical Education programmes.

*Students enrolled in the BSc Physical Education are offered the same modules but due to placement timings these are delivered in different running order. Please consult the BSc Physical Education programme page for further details.
