Research in UL Geography

Geography is a new and fast-growing discipline at UL. The staff has a broad range of spatial and temporal research interests, from the environment and sustainability through to place and emotions, historical geography and the history of cartography. We are specialists in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for research and teaching, staff having worked in industry roles as well as academia, and we administer the UL GIS across campus for other faculties and departments.

We pride ourselves in research-led teaching, ensuring students have an awareness of the latest research across many aspects of the discipline.

Research Funding

Our staff has been successfully awarded research funding from the Irish Research Council, Science Foundation Ireland, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Royal Irish Academy and the J.B. Harley Trust, amongst others.

Under Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), we are in receipt of funding for €350,000 leading Project BE_MAP - understanding Mercury in Ireland and Working Towards New Zero: Developing a Metabolic Inventory of Mercury-Added Products and Mercury Containing Wastes in the Built Environment.

Staff currently hold funding of over €740,000 from the Irish Research Council and the UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council (in conjunction with Queen's University Belfast) for the project titled, OS200, which investigates the history of the 1st Ordnance Survey of Ireland.
