Event Details: The World Academy of Music and Dance are delighted to welcome the Brazilian Ambassador to Ireland, Sr. Marçel Biato to Limerick as part of the UL 50 celebrations.

The Ambassador will convene a panel discussion as part of Rhythms and Rhymes of Resistance, a one-day seminar investigating the use of culture in colonial and post-colonial societies. Speakers include Breandán de Gallaí, Course Director, BA Irish Dance at the IAWMD and Luciano Tosta Associate Professor, Director of Graduate Studies, Center for Global & International Studies, school of Spanish and Portuguese, University of Kansas. The afternoon will consist of practical skills workshops in Afro Brazilian Music and Dance, hosted by Simeon Smith (IWAMD) and Alessandra Azevedo (Criola Dance).

 

The event takes place in Theatre 1, IWAMD, on Wednesday, November 23rd.

Event Details: The concert will feature Grammy winning American singer Rhiannon Giddens who is currently Artist in Residence at the Irish World Academy, along with  Muireann Nic Amhloaibh and the Irish Chamber Orchestra will perform excerpts from Róisín Reimagined, the album she recorded with the ICO in early 2022; a newly-composed piece by Patrick Cassidy - 'Beatha an Scoláire' which was co-commissioned by RTE Lyric FM and UL which will feature Murieann Nic Amhlaoibh, the UL Choir and the ICO, as well as a piece is created by former Riverdance lead and current lecturer at the Irish World Academy Breandán de Gallaí, based on Vivaldi's aria 'Vedro con mio diletto'. Hello, How Are You? Coffee Morning

Event Details: Hello, How Are You? is a campaign about connecting with those around us and engaging in open conversations about mental health. It's about asking the question, "How are you?" with meaning, and really listening to the response.

Limerick Mental Health Association is running the HELLO campaign in order to raise funds to help expand our local services. The campaign breaks down the steps: H.E.L.L.O. (H: Hello E: Engage L: Listen L: Learn and O: Options) which supports people to reach out, say hello and ask how are you?

The coffee morning will help raise donations for the campaign and promote the message of the campaign.

The University of Limerick's predecessor, NIHE Limerick, opened it's doors in the academic year 1972/73. It's first (and initially only) Humanities degree, the BA in European Studies, was the new institution's response to Ireland's future in Europe, heralded by the country's entry into the ECC on 1 January 1973.

To mark fifty years of the BA in European Studies at the University o Limerick, now one of the longest-established degree programmes of it's kind in the world, the University is organizing an event to reflect on the past fifty years of European Studies at UL as well as on the future of a field that has become all the more important for Ireland after the UK's decision to leave the EU.

Event Details: Ryan's visit to UL was in the week of his last Late Late Show and days ahead of his fiftieth birthday, which was fitting as the institution celebrates its own fiftieth anniversary UL50 this year and he was presented with a cake and a number of gifts during his visit. Ryan spoke to staff and students and heard performances by students and faculty at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. Ryan broadcasted his show live from the UL campus the following day, where guests included Donal Ryan, Professor Orla Muldoon, Professor Amanda Haynes and Professor Jennifer Schweppe.
