About Pat Cox
Pat Cox is a distinguished Irish politician, economist, and advocate for European integration. His career spans academia, journalism, and high-level political leadership, including serving as President of the European Parliament (2002–2004).
Career Highlights
Pat Cox began as a Lecturer in Economics before moving into journalism with RTÉ. He entered politics as Secretary General of the Progressive Democrats and later served as a TD (1992–1994) and MEP for Munster (1989–2004). As European Parliament President, he played a key role in EU enlargement.
Post-politics, he has held leadership roles in European and sustainability-focused organisations. He is currently President of the Jean Monnet Foundation for Europe, European Coordinator for the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Transport Corridor, and leads EU parliamentary reform efforts in Ukraine. He also chairs several sustainability-focused companies.
Honours
Pat Cox has received numerous international honours, including the Charlemagne Prize, the Order of Merit (Ukraine), and national awards from several EU countries. He holds honorary doctorates from leading universities.
