All current/registered University of Limerick students need an account and password to access IT services provided by UL. 

All first year students will receive details about their student accounts (username & password) via email prior to your enrolment at UL. The user ID is your student ID number (e.g. 1723456).  

Your student account gives you access to Library Resources, Brightspace (ULs Learning Management System), Email and Student Administration portal for the duration of your academic career at UL. If you leave the University and return on a later date, your student ID account will remain the same. Please see email section on policies regarding access and conditions for graduated students

All new students will receive an email from UL with their initial password. 

You MUST change your student account password after first logging in with the default password issued at enrolment or by ITD Service Desk.

Go to http://portal.office.com and enter your UL email address in the format StudentID@studentmail.ul.ie   (e.g. 12345678@studentmail.ul.ie)

You will need to Activate your Account before you can access IT Services by doing the following:

  1. Register for Multifactor Authentication (MFA) & Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR)
  2. Change your initial password.

You can use the “Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR)” to reset your password. If you cannot reset your password using SSPR, click here to contact the Service Desk.

Your student account will provide access to the following IT Services:

  • Email & Microsoft 365 Apps including OneDrive for Business & MS Teams
  • Brightspace (UL’s Virtual Learning Service)
  • Library Resources
  • Computer Lab PCs
  • WiFi – eduroam

What is the format of my user ID / username?

Your student ID number is your User ID / Username (e.g. 1723456).

Please note ,you access your Email Account, Microsoft 365 Apps and WiFi (eduroam) with your username in the following format - <student ID number>@studentmail.ul.ie

The UL Password Standards describes the characteristics of a valid password.

Complete the online form, and your password will be reset and issued to you within 24 hours (Monday to Friday). Please only submit this form once and include a description of the issue you are encountering in the comment field.

Students should be aware of the cyber threats in a University and are encouraged to avail of a free online IT Security Awareness Training module.

Phishing scams are a major threat today. Phishing scams will attempt to trick you into giving away personal information such as your ID login, password, banking or credit card information.

Follow these password tips:

  • Don’t share passwords and don’t write passwords down.
  • Never use the same passwords for multiple accounts and devices.

Computer Account Passwords can be reset easily using Self-Service Password Reset.

 

Avoid downloading software from untrusted sources. These sites often host malware that will automatically, and often silently be installed on your computer. If you are suspicious of an attachments or links, do not click on them.

Never store data on UL PC's. Student PC files are wiped daily and no information should be stored locally on UL computers. All data should be stored on your  Microsoft OneDrive or External Storage Devices (USB keys). “Phishing” is a very common type of cyber-attack. Phishing attacks can take many forms, but they all share a common goal - getting you to disclose sensitive information.

  • Be careful of emails requesting you to verify your log in details. ITD will never ask you to do this via email
  • Do not click on links or attachments from unknown senders. Be especially wary of compressed or executable file types
  • Do not provide any sensitive or personal information over email to unsolicited callers
  • Check email senders address for suspicious or misleading domain names (eg. sender@gmail.com.br)
  • If you cannot tell if an email is legitimate, don't open It!
