This free public talk/webinar will present and discuss results from a recent clinical trial published in the prestigious Lancet Journal. The trial showed that personalised physiotherapy, which addresses both the physical and psychological aspects of persistent back pain, not only relieves back pain but also saved over €3,000 for every patient treated using this approach. Some key messages in this talk/webinar include;
- Treatment of back pain needs to address both the physical and psychological impact of back pain. For too long, the huge emotional toll of back pain on people has been minimised, or stigmatised.
- Treatment of back pain needs to be unique to the actual person with back pain. What works for one person may not work for another person. By spending time getting to really know the person with back pain, and not only looking at their scans, it is possible to identify specific triggers for their pain.
- The way we have traditionally trained medical professionals to treat back pain needs to change in line with the evidence on back pain.
- The types of treatments that governments, health insurers and employers support and subsidise needs to reflect what actually works, rather than what we have done traditionally
