RIU - Delivering Health Technology Innovation

The Rapid Innovation Unit (RIU) is a research group between the University of Limerick and the University Hospital Limerick Group. The aim of RIU is to apply innovation methodologies to enhance patient quality of life, while working closely with all stakeholders within the local and national healthcare system to foster an innovation ecosystem.

RIU is an innovation group founded as a response to unmet clinical needs within the local healthcare system. The activity of the group is grounded on imbedded and immersive educational approaches towards developing innovation skills of frontline healthcare staff. The group then works closely with healthcare partners to develop solutions. Clinical colleagues contribute ideas and critique the design iterations as they evolve, fostering an ‘ecosystem of innovation’ within the group. The Unit also leads research on personalisation of medical solutions using 3D printing, and novel approaches to producing medical technologies in  healthcare settings, both in the community and in hospitals.
