The University of Limerick (UL) has taken a significant step towards fostering an age-inclusive campus, officially joining the Age Friendly University Global Network (AFU) on December 6th, 2024. The initiative, spearheaded by the Human Rights, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (HREDI) Department, aims to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for older adults, promoting lifelong learning and community engagement.
At the forefront of this initiative is Professor Rose Galvin, a distinguished member of the HREDI Department and a founding member of the Age Friendly University Committee. Professor Galvin, a renowned expert in physiotherapy and aging research, has been instrumental in shaping UL's commitment to age inclusivity. Her dedication to improving the health and well-being of older adults aligns perfectly with the AFU's mission and Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.
By co-chairing the committee, Professor Galvin brings a wealth of expertise and a passion for promoting healthy aging. Her leadership is essential in ensuring that UL's Age Friendly University initiative is implemented effectively and has a lasting impact on the lives of older adults.
The launch event, which featured prominent speakers including Regius Professor Rose Anne Kenny and Alix McDonald, highlighted the importance of creating age-friendly environments in higher education. By embracing the principles of the AFU, UL is not only expanding educational opportunities for older adults but also contributing to a more inclusive and equitable society.
This initiative is a testament to UL's commitment to its strategic goal of promoting good health and well-being across the lifespan. By fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity, UL is empowering older adults to lead fulfilling and active lives.
