An RTE Brainstorm article co-authored by Cathal McCauley, Martin Bradley and Dr Stuart Hamilton has highlighted the continuing issues libraries are facing when sourcing ebooks.
The three main issues are
- Lack of availability
- High costs
- Onerous terms and conditions
The ebookSOS campaign which started during the Covid pandemic continues to raise awareness of how these issues result in poor value for libraries and their users. Ciara McCaffrey, UL Library Director represents UL Library in this campaign. Working with partners such as Knowledge Rights 21, the campaign aims to bring changes “that will lead to a tangible improvement for libraries and readers, and for ebooks to be provided on reasonable and sustainable terms.”
