We cordially invite staff and students from the UL community to the 'World Café on Student Carers' on Wednesday 23rd October 2024.

This café will help in the co-creation of an Infographic titled ‘Student Carers in University - Recognition & Support', and may also inform related publications and reports on student carers.

Staff from the Department of Nursing and Midwifery in UL, in collaboration with the national organisation 'Family Carers Ireland - Young Carers', are interested in supporting students who are caring for a relative while also attending university.

These individuals can also be known as ‘Young carers’ or ‘Student carers’, and this is a term that encompasses those who provide ongoing care for a relative with an illness, disability, mental health issue, or addiction. They are involved in substantial caring tasks for the care recipient/s, including caring for their parents and siblings.  This responsibility level can surpass the usual expectations at this life stage; managing caring responsibilities alongside the academic demands of university can be challenging.

We are hosting a ‘World Café on Student Carers’ to raise awareness and discuss how best to support these students in UL and the staff who may encounter them.

Discussions and information gathered from this café will help in the co-creation of an Infographic titled ‘Student Carers in University - Recognition & Support', and may also inform related publications and reports on student carers.

This World Café on Student Carers’ will occur in The Pavilion, North Campus, University of Limerick, Limerick, V94 F7XW on Wednesday 23rd October 2024 from 1:15 to 4pm

Entry is FREE, and open to all UL students and staff. Lunch, Coffee, and chocolate cake will be provided.

We welcome you, your colleagues and students from your School/Department to this event.

Through greater understanding and awareness, support can be created for student carers and staff impacted by this issue.
