We're catching up with our 2017 graduates, to see where they are at, one year on. Seán Lynch graduated with a BA in Journalism & New Media from the University of Limerick in 2017. He talks about his time at UL, what he's currently doing, and has some great advice for our Journalism final year students:
Looking back, what did you like best about your course?
I liked how broad the course was, initially focusing mainly on print media, but branching into the worlds of online media, radio, video and more.
What did you like best about UL?
My clubs and societies experience was hugely positive for me. I was able to make connections with new people and put my skills to use on various committees over the course of my four years in UL, winning UL clubs and societies' Outstanding Achievement Award in my final year.
Did you make any plans before you graduated, such as study, career or travel plans?
I was very fortunate to be interviewed for my current job in my final semester at UL. My interview was successful and so I was able to plan for starting my full-time job one week after finishing college.
What have you been doing since you graduated?
Since graduating I have been working as the Marketing Assistant for the Lime Tree Theatre and Belltable, Limerick's two premiere venues for Limerick theatre, music, cinema, comedy and the arts. I'm enjoying my job, working with a tight-knit group in running both venues. My role is very broad as Marketing Assistant, managing seven social media channels across both venues, working with press, managing Adwords and marketing to current customers. I am also involved in the day-to-day administration of both venues, working in box office, booking rooms and ensuring visiting companies' stay is smooth. The broad range of skills from the course and focus on multi-tasking have put me a step ahead in starting in this job.
Have you any future career plans?
I am very happy working in Limerick theatre currently, with a great team at the Lime Tree Theatre and Belltable, improving my skills in marketing as well as making wonderful connections.
Any advice for our current final year students?
I think it's important to be open with what path you want to pursue beyond the course and embrace the different fields you will get to learn about the course - from online news-writing to broadcasting sports journalism.
