Abstract: The study of the English language in Ireland has a long history, going back to the late nineteenth century and continuing through the twentieth into the present century. It is a vibrant field of research with a large group of colleagues who work closely together, and the latest addition to the many books in the field is The Oxford Handbook of Irish English (2023). This intensive linguistic groundwork has meant that Irish English has become centre-stage in international research on varieties of English. The purpose of this talk will be to focus on key areas in Irish English, such as language contact, pragmatics, sociolinguistic change and globalisation, and to highlight the contribution of Irish scholars to communities of researchers working on forms of English worldwide.
