The next AHSS PhD Development Session is on ‘Transcribing’. This hybrid seminar will take place on Wednesday 14 February 2024 at 11am in the Kate O’Brien Room (C1-079). This seminar will be of interest to all PhD students who have to transcribe from interviews and focus groups. Speakers and their topics at the event are; Professor Amanda Haynes, Professor of Sociology.
Amanda Haynes has participated in multiple funded research projects which required the transcription of interviews and focus groups. She will discuss the kinds of choices that researchers need to make around transcription, including - what to transcribe, whether to use a notation system, what kind of meta data to record, how to transcribe overlapping voices, how to transcribe non-verbal data, what issues to consider if you are paying for transcription, and her own experiences of success and failure in using technology to assist transcription.
Brendan Bolger (IT Transcription software (Machine Transcription) Speech to editable text conversion Machine transcription, converts spoken language into text using deep learning and NLP algorithms. It enriches education by offering real-time captions for lectures, aiding language learning, and enhancing accessibility for students. Challenges include variations in dialects and background noise. Future advancements aim to include multilingual support and improve contextual understanding. Postgraduate students can benefit from utilizing machine transcription for note-taking, language practice, and research transcription tasks. Understanding its capabilities and limitations is crucial for effective integration into academic workflows and leveraging its potential for improved learning outcomes and research efficiency.
