Contemporary Spanish politics has been strongly characterised by claims of recognition which are rooted in linguistic and national groups such as Catalans, Basques or Galicians. This talk will focus on the main historical events that have resulted in the contemporary situation in Spain; one which characterized in various conflicts concerning questions of linguistic and national recognition. In particular, we focus on the case of Catalonia and the events which have occurred there over the last number of years, where consecutive Catalan governments have called for independence from Spain.
