Dr Bronagh Ann McShane has published a new book on Irish women in religious orders in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Published with Boydell & Brewer in October 2022, Irish Women in Religious Orders, 1530-1700: Suppression, Migration and Reintegration is the first comprehensive study carried out on this subject. The publication charts the survival of Irish women religious in the midst of what was a period characterised by upheaval, conflict and migration, including the establishments of foundations of Augustinian, Dominican, Carmelite and Poor Clare nuns in Galway.
To coincide with the publication, Dr McShane will give a free public lecture entitled ‘An island for nuns? Galway women religious in the seventeenth century’ at the meeting of the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society on Monday 14th November @7pm in the the Harbour Hotel.
