Dr. Darina Slattery, Associate Professor in E-Learning and Instructional Design at the School of English, Irish, and Communication, was awarded funding from the AHSS Faculty Research Committee and the School of English, Irish, and Communication to attend, and present at, the IEEE Professional Communication Conference (ProComm), which took place at Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania, from 14-17 July 2024.

The annual ProComm conference, which is hosted by the IEEE Professional Communication Society, is an international conference that attracts academics and workplace practitioners from the fields of technical and professional communication, e-learning, and user experience (UX). Darina’s activities before and during the IEEE ProComm conference:
- Darina served as Program Co-Chair for the conference, processing all paper, workshop, and panel submissions and developing the conference program.
- In her role as Immediate Past President of the IEEE Professional Communication Society, Darina also attended the annual Board of Governors meeting, which took place immediately before the conference (13-14 July). During that meeting, board members worked on events relating to content (publications and the ProComm website) and membership outreach and engagement.
- During the ProComm conference, Darina co-presented a roundtable/ information session with Professor Pam Estes Brewer from Mercer University, Georgia, USA on ‘Bridging Opportunities between IEEE and ProComm’. The purpose of the presentation was to encourage attendees to volunteer for IEEE ProComm society activities.
- As Immediate Past President, Darina also coordinated the ProComm awards ceremony, which took place on 16 July—awards were presented for best papers in the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication journal, best conference papers, distinction in technical communication education, and outstanding achievement in engineering communication.
