Last weekend marked the centenary of the Handover of Dublin Castle from the British Administration to the Provisional Government, which was the beginning of the establishment of Ireland as an independent State.
On Friday, Dr Laura Cahillane spoke to Shane McElhatton, along with historian John Gibney and RTE’s David McCullough, on RTE’s Morning Ireland Programme and then afterwards on the RTE News channel, about the importance of that event. Dr Cahillane later presented a paper at a conference in Dublin Castle on the legal complexities of the handover of power. The Conference was organised by Trinity College with the Department of the Taoiseach and the OPW and speakers included the Taoiseach Mícheál Martin and Minister Catherine Martin. It was attended by hundreds online as well as a restricted audience in the Castle.
