Dr Laura Cahillane on The Week in Politics

On Sunday Dr Laura Cahillane from the School of Law made an appearance on RTE tv’s The Week in Politics. The item related to a proposal from Seanad Cathaoirleach Senator Mark Daly to bring about various changes to Seanad practice and procedure. Dr Cahillane spoke about how there are various problems with the existing franchise and composition in the Seanad and noted that many changes could be made within the existing constitutional structure. She commented that the changes proposed, including additional scrutiny of EU legislation, would be very useful.
Dr Cahillane has previously written about the issue of Seanad reform and last year acted as an expert witness in the High Court in a case taken by a UL Graduate which argued that there is a constitutional duty on the government to implement the 7th Amendment to the Constitution in order provide for equality amongst University graduates in in Seanad University franchise. The case is still awaiting judgment.
