Professor Emeritus Edward Moxon-Browne presented UL MA student of European Studies Emma Sexton with the 2021 Award for Best FYP in European Studies in the University of Limerick on Thursday 21st October last. The Award Ceremony was attended by students of European Studies as well as Professor Moxon-Browne; Professor Joachim Fischer, Jean Monnet Chair in European Cultural Studies; and Dr. Liam Murray, Head of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics and Emma's FYP supervisor. Also in attendance was Dr. Sorcha de Brún, Course Director for European Studies. Professor Fischer welcomed attendees at the event, and congratulated Emma and her supervisor Dr. Murray on the high quality of her research. In presenting the award, Professor Moxon-Browne commented on the FYP as a 'capstone project' for students, and noted how contemporary Emma's research on FOMO (fear of missing out) in social media was, yielding as it did results that had potentially important implications for policy, both nationally and at a European level. Professor Moxon-Browne also noted how aspects of Emma's research highlighted the two-way relationship between alcoholism and FOMO. Adding to Professor Moxon-Browne's congratulations, Dr. Murray remarked on the rigor and excellence in social science research as evidenced by Emma's FYP. Emma studied both Irish and French as an undergraduate of European Studies, and Dr. Murray commented on the important place of the Irish language in European Studies. The Award Ceremony concluded with thanks from Emma to fellow students, to Dr. Murray for his excellent supervision, Professor Fischer for his constant support of her throughout her undergraduate degree, and to Professor Moxon-Browne for the honor of receiving the award.
