On Tuesday 28th January, Kaori Frizelle and Akie Nagahashi (Japanese Section, MLAL) delivered a calligraphy workshop to 35 international students. Fourth-year students Ben Murphy and Vipasha Tare also helped out on the day. The event took place from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm at The Globe. This workshop was part of a series of events organised by UL Global to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
Participants first learned how to write their names in katakana, which is one of the three basic Japanese scripts. Then, they wrote some kanji (pictographic characters) related to the new year, including happiness, luck and laughter. Participants first practiced on a draft paper before attempting to use calligraphy brushes and rice paper to write their names and characters. Photos of the event are available.
