A compelling new book, titled "A Job of Journeywork," is set to be unveiled, featuring a carefully curated selection of writings from the respected late Limerick TD, socialist and historian, Jim Kemmy. Published by the Limerick Writers’ Centre and edited by historian Dr Derek Mulcahy and LWC's director, Dominic Taylor, this literary treasure promises to shed light on Kemmy's profound influence on Irish politics and his unwavering commitment to social justice. The official book launch, which is eagerly anticipated, will take place at the People's Museum of Limerick on Sunday, November 19th, at 3:00 pm. Professor Eoin Devereux will have the honour of launching this exceptional collection to the public. "A Job of Journeywork" delves into the life and legacy of Jim Kemmy, a remarkable figure whose words have resonated through the annals of Irish history. The book spans Kemmy's writings, ranging from the 1960s to his passing in 1996, conveniently divided into the various decades. Throughout the pages of this anthology, readers will trace Kemmy's transformative journey from a local activist to a nationally recognized and respected political luminary. Discussing the origins of the project, co-editor Dominic Taylor shared the inspiration behind the book's creation. He emphasized the need to make Kemmy's words more accessible to contemporary readers, stating, " The idea for the book came about during the 25th anniversary celebrations of Jim’s death last year. While a lot was said about the man, if one wanted to read his utterances then very little was readily available without doing some research. We felt that to have a selection of his work on hand, in book form, would introduce a new generation to his importance as a man who was ahead of the curve in his thinking politically and socially." Co-editor and historian Dr Derek Mulcahy emphasised Jim Kemmy's deep connection to Limerick, both in his political pursuits and literary endeavours. Mulcahy stated, "Jim’s texts and voice expressed a concern and care for his fellow citizens. All his literary work was a labour of love that opened up the treasures of Limerick to all. His editorship of the Old Limerick Journal has inspired many in the study of the history of Limerick. This selected work expresses a human quality of honesty and integrity and as a politician a fair straight talking and open expression." Speaking ahead of the launch Limerick writer, Professor Eoin Devereux, who wrote the foreword to this important book stated: ‘In these times of Neo-Liberalism and individualism we need to return to the core socialist ideals and values which were at the core of Jim Kemmy’s thinking.” Jim Kemmy's writings serve as a captivating journey through the intricate tapestry of Irish politics and history. They provide a deep and resonant understanding of the challenges faced by a nascent nation, the influences of political ideologies, and the lasting impact of social movements. His words inspire readers to engage critically with the past, ultimately shaping a more just and inclusive future. Furthermore, Kemmy's writings highlight the dynamic interplay between politics and history in Ireland, offering profound insights, meticulous research, and impassioned advocacy. These writings beckon readers to embark on a transformative intellectual journey that enlightens, challenges, and empowers all to work collectively for a brighter future, not only for Ireland but also for the wider world.
