Tell us a bit about yourself, what course did you study in UL, what has your career looked like to date?
My name is David O’Leary, a proud University of Limerick alumnus. I graduated with a Bachelor of Business Studies degree in 2017, after which I started working in the aircraft leasing industry. My career has been on an exciting trajectory since graduation. Starting in a transactions-based role, I quickly progressed to a customer-facing role in the Asia-Pacific region based in Singapore. Currently, I work as Vice President of customer Engagement at Avolon, a global leader in aviation finance.
Tell us a bit about your co-op placement, what organisation did you work with and what year it took place?
I worked on the Tax team of a large aircraft leasing company. I completed my co-op in 2016 and rejoined the company once I graduated. Within a year of graduating, I made the move to Singapore. I joined Avolon in 2021, a company I was attracted to because of its strong team-based culture, global footprint and rapid growth trajectory
What impact did your co-op placement have on your future career?
My co-op had a profound impact on my future career, providing a direct pathway to my current role. It reinforced my academic learning, demonstrated my capabilities to potential employers, and established a valuable professional network. This network has been instrumental in my career advancement, offering access to opportunities, advice, and learnings. What piece of advice would you give to students going on co-op now?
Approach this opportunity with an open mind and willingness to learn. Be proactive, take ownership of projects, and seek feedback from mentors. Networking is crucial – build relationships with colleagues, industry professionals, and alumni. Reflect on your experiences, identifying skills gained and areas for growth. This self-awareness will propel you toward a successful and fulfilling career.
