Co-op Photo Competition Winner Ciara Beaton Reflects on Her Time at Ei Electronics

Ciara Beaton, one of the winners of our Co-op Photo Competition, shared her transformative experience during her co-op placement at Ei Electronics.

"Completing my co-op placement was an eye-opening experience that allowed me to bridge the gap between theory and practice," Ciara explained. "Throughout my time with Ei Electronics, I had the opportunity to apply what I had learned in the classroom to real-world projects, develop new technical skills, and experience firsthand what it’s like to work in a professional environment."

One of the most significant benefits of a co-op, according to Ciara, is the exposure to new challenges and problem-solving situations that are impossible to replicate in an academic setting. "From day one, I was able to contribute to meaningful projects, collaborate with experienced professionals, and learn from my mistakes," she said. "It’s not just about developing technical skills—co-op placements also teach you how to communicate effectively, manage your time, and work as part of a team."

This invaluable experience helped Ciara gain clarity about her future career path and gave her the confidence to tackle more complex challenges moving forward. "Before my co-op, I wasn't always sure which aspect of my career I wanted to work towards. This experience highlights what you do and don't like, and where you can excel," she concluded.

The Co-op Photo Competition runs each year with co-op students being invited to submit a photo which highlights their experiences. The competition is open to all current co-op students at the University of Limerick, and prizes are awarded to the top 10 entries. From Shannon to Chicago, previous winners have given us a peek into their daily routines during placement, shared memories of exciting trips, and showcased what their new cities had to offer.
