Joachim Fischer was invited to speak on an expert panel at "EP Elections 2024: Community and Cohesion in the EU" - an event organised by The Journal and UL's School of Journalism partner ahead of the June European Parliament elections.

This event looked at community and cohesion in the EU, asking questions such as:

  • To which extent, do we in Ireland understand the European Parliament, the work it does (and does not do)?
  • How we in Ireland see ourselves as part of the European Community and what are the barriers and opportunities to develop cohesion among EU countries and communities?

It was moderated by Dr Niamh Kirk, Assistant Professor in Data Journalism and Social Media and Course Director of the MA in Journalism in UL.

The expert panellists were:

  • Karen Coleman, Editor EU News Radio (Ireland)
  • Prof. Joachim Fischer, Emeritus Jean Monnet Chair in European Cultural Studies, UL
  • Rory Harte, Director of Strategy, European Movement Ireland
  • Dr Susan Leahy, Senior Lecturer, School of Law, UL
