Universities, research institutions and individual departments may apply for various Athena Swan Awards. Applications are accepted in April and November each year and applicants must indicate their intention to apply two months prior to the closing date in order to be considered.
The rolling submission deadlines from AdvanceHE for November 2023, April 2024 and November 2024 are as follows:
- 30 November 2023 – 19 January 2024
- 30 April 2024 – 14 June 2024
- 30 November 2024 – 17 January 2025

The Intersectionality Guide is the result of a collaborative project between Carlow College and Institute of Technology Carlow - Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education: Capacity Building in Advancing Intersectionality. The project comprised a symposium Gender and Race in Higher Education: Good practice and competing inequalities which was facilitated by Professor Kalwant Bhopal, Professor of Education and Social Justice, and Director of the Centre for Research in Race & Education, University of Birmingham and the development of this guide.
