What will be covered? Overview
This highly interactive grant writing course teaches researchers critical skills to write effective research proposals and win funding. We discuss the relevant funding agencies for the participants' subject and how to develop and refine a grant proposal tailored to different calls. We also take participants through the process by which funders evaluate proposals and review examples of real proposals in an interactive session, discussing the positives and negatives of each one. Additional exercises guide participants to develop and communicate their ideas using practical brainstorming tools. Because successful proposals depend on effective writing, we also teach how to effectively communicate complex research ideas to a less specialist panel review audience. Finally, we take participants through the stages of the collaborative proposal writing and editing process

Peer review helps to ensure the quality and reputation of published academic research. The ability to review manuscripts for journals is a core skill that every researcher must acquire. However, many inexperienced reviewers can spend too much time reviewing a single manuscript. By learning how to review manuscripts quickly, you will have more time for your own research. But how long should you spend reviewing a manuscript? And what should you write in your review? Find out in this workshop which draws upon the results of an extensive survey of editors of international journals. The main focus will be on STEM journals, with best practice based on the views of 116 editors of medical, psychology, biology, chemistry, physics, maths, engineering and geology journals. The workshop is also highly relevant to Social Science, Arts and Humanities researchers as it includes the views of 112 editors of sociology, economics, law, history, philosophy, literature and linguistics journals.
Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes
Through group exercises and discussions, attendees at this workshop will learn:
- how the peer review system works
- about their responsibilities as reviewers
- what editors expect in a review
- why the peer review system can sometimes go wrong
- how to critically evaluate a research manuscript
