Time:

Speaker: Dr Sarah Graham
This seminar aims to demonstrate how to create, develop and sustain academic culture and programmatic socialisation through student leadership. This approach will be showcased by Dr. Sarah Graham of Newcastle University (UK).Sarah will discuss the Newcastle approach to peer leadership and effectiveness in aiding the transition of first year students into their programme.Evidence suggests that initiatives with a student leadership/mentoring approach have the potential to result in positive outcomes for student engagement and retention. The 'What Works' programme has identified that:
- Students prefer to receive their academic development and support within their academic department.
- Sharing concerns allows students to realize that many of their worries about studying are normal and/or shared by others.
- Peer mentoring can also provide students with access to useful academic development and support, especially as a mentor can appear more accesible to students than members of staff.
