External Communications

The External Communications function of the Marketing and Communications Division at UL manages all media relations, public relations, social media, external communications and crisis management for University of Limerick.

Key areas of focus for the Division are the national and international publication of UL's research stories, generating editorial and expert opinion content for UL's academics, international profiling of the University, a continually evolving social media strategy and the generation of excellent video and digital media content.

Management and development of the UL institutional voice and messaging.  Taking the lead from the UL strategy, the President and the Executive Committee an agile set of messages and focus is continually adapted to underpin the institutional communications.

Development of public and key commentator profiles for UL’s academics. Positioning UL academics and senior management as thought leaders.

In 2023, University of Limerick marked its 50th Anniversary, we looked back at our creation, what we had achieved to date, and how we will evolve to help society tackle the problems of the future through academic and research excellence. Communications leadership during crisis management situations including minor events and those that invoke the Executive Critical Incident Protocol.

This function is a 24/7 ‘always on’ function.

Management of all media relations both proactive and reactive for UL, its senior leadership, academics and affiliates. 

Media relationship management, media monitoring and analysis, preparing institutional statements, spokesperson identification, training, and briefing, collating, analysing and ensuring up to date monitoring of media coverage, assisting in planning, developing and implementation of positive messaging strategies.

Proactive communications for UL’s research output as a key division priority; advising early-stage career researchers on media engagement and training.

UL is a founding partner of the RTE Brainstorm research profiling initiative.

UL Communications works with the Office of the President to provide support to UL faculties and support divisions with the co-ordination of high-level institutional visits by Heads of State, Ministers and Ambassadors.

The Division also event manages large scale institutional events which have the potential to significantly augment the national and international profile of University of Limerick.

External communications manages all UL institutional social media accounts and publishing platforms with a collective following of over 250,000 individuals.

The Marketing and Communications Division supports the UL Social Media Community Group spread across the institution and offers training, strategic advice and policy guidelines.

The production of digital media content is a significant priority for the Division.

Since its inception in 2007, the magazine has profiled international academics, ground-breaking research, student innovations and initiatives while covering the visits of some of the world’s most influential leaders of politics, sports and entertainment to the University of Limerick campus, including the Dalai Lama and former President of the US Bill Clinton. UL Links will continue to share the stories from our community for many issues to come.
