UL Students – do you want to help showcase student life, while making some extra €€€?

Every year our Student Social Media Officer (SSMO) team work hand in hand with the UL MarComms team to bring to life the UL student experience. Whether it’s jumping on the latest TikTok trend while on campus, a video piece on your new Clubs and Socs besties or a DITL for your Erasmus experience – we want to hear your stories... and help you earn some €€€ while you're at it!

Student Social Media Officers (SSMOs) create content for UL social media channels and website. This might include, but is not limited to:

  • Creating TikToks/Reels
  • Filming and editing long-form video
  • On campus photography/videography
  • On-camera presenter roles
  • Scripting content for other students to present
  • Writing blogs/articles for UL website
  • Creating voiceovers and subtitles for UL videos
  • Creating graphics, filters, GIFs etc for use on social

While UL's MarComms team will sometimes have specific requests, SSMOs are very much encouraged to come up with your own creative ideas. We trust you to produce, edit, and post content that fellow students will love!

Simply download a copy of the form linked here and send your completed form along with 2  samples of your work to marketing@ul.ie.

Tips for your application:

  • SKILLS/INTERESTS: We’re looking for your skills in any form of content production here, but listing your personal passions and hobbies are also welcome and might lead to opportunities (i.e. someone very interested in Sport might enjoy covering UL games for social)
  • LINKS TO PUBLIC SOCIAL CHANNELS: If you have a public TikTok, blog, Insta etc. here’s the place to link it. Likewise if there’s a channel for a business or organisation you have previously created content for, you can share the info here. If you don’t have that yet, don’t worry, you can still share content directly. Which leads us to…

Samples of your work

For whatever format of work you’d like to create for UL, we’d ask to see at least two examples of same. You can share as many different types of creative as you’d like. Some examples:

  • TikTok/Reel – examples of same (share your DITLs, PLOGs, trends etc.)
  • Graphic design – social assets, posters, leaflets etc.
  • Presenting – existing video of you or new self-filmed short delivery to camera
  • Video production/editing – existing materials or shoot sub 90 second video on campus that showcase your skills
  • Motion graphics – examples of same
  • Copywriting – e.g. 5 sample timeline posts for UL channels
  • Photography – examples of imagery taken on UL campus or of students/friends

Please note this is NOT an exhaustive list – if you have skills not listed above you feel would be useful please do share!

Also remember you do not have to be at professional level to apply – we welcome all skill levels and you’ll have the opportunity to learn on the job and from your fellow Student Social Media Officers (SSMOs).

Besides honour, glory, and social media fame*? (*None of these are guaranteed).

Being a Student Social Media Officer (SSMO) is a paid position, which offers a rate of €15 per hour. There will be bigger projects which will have an assigned project fee we'll agree with you in advance.

In addition to the financial rewards, the role also offers great work experience for your CV, content to add to your portfolio and successful SSMOs will have the MarComms team on standby to act as references for prospective employers.

You can also count on some UL merchandise and the odd coffee on campus. #Winning

Most content can be created using your own phone. However, the MarComms team will make anything extra needed available to you including: access to lapel mics, tripods, ring lights, editing apps etc. We are also very much open to any suggestions you have on ways we can make life for content creators easier.

Very much so. While there will be specific dates related to events where we may look for Student Social Media Officers' support, we completely understand your studies come first. We will assign work according to your skillset and availability, and you are always welcome to come to us on spec with any ideas you have for content.

We'll offer regular support sessions as a group to ensure that you get the most out of your experience of being a Student Social Media Officer and we will also have some office ‘open hours’ where you are free to pop in and discuss any ideas, questions or queries you might have.
